reasonable hotel rates in new york city or new jersey?

i’m planning a trip to NYC. don’t want to spend a great deal of money on a hotel but I want to be in a safer, cleaner part of the city. Any suggestions on a hotel either in nyc or in new jersey(i hear some hotel in NJ provide some transportation into the city)?

   Gershwin Hotel, E. 27th St. off 5th Ave. about $50 per person per night.
   Pod Hotel, 230 E. 51 St. between 2nd & 3rd Aves. Rates start at $89. not a full size room.
