yeah there is no such thing as ‘reasonable rates’ in NYC… Try a backpacker hostel or something.

define reasonable. It is relative.

You should have booked much farther in advance…June and July are prime tourist months in New York and all the “reasonable” hotels, B&Bs, hostels and YMCAs will probably be booked solid by now.
I had to research some hotels for a vistor and here is the information I gave her. If you’re lucky, there’ll be an opening:
The Gershwin Hotel, which is in Chelsea (next door to Greenwich Village) has rooms with shared baths for $46.00. It’s not the Ritz but you’d at least be in the city and the surrounding area is well lit, safe and close to public transportation. I would book this one as early as possible as it’s very popular.
Another one in Chelsea is the Colonial House Inn which looks lovely.
$85.00 a night with a shared bath.
The Pickwick Arms Hotel is $106.00 a night.
You would have to book through to get the above rates.
Another option is a bed and breakfast I found on West 93rd Street, here in the city if you can get availability, they offer rooms for 75.00 a night based upon a 3 night stay. In some cases they will book for less depending upon their schedule.
The Efuru Guest House, which is right near Columbia University offers a room at $85.00 a night with a shared bath and $115.00 with a private bath:
I found a bed and breakfast in Astoria, Queens which is fairly close to LaGuardia and also not that far from Manhattan by train, bus or cab. They have no online booking.
Astoria B&B
