I am spending a week in los angeles and two kids to go see american idol in late march. The best hotel rates?

for nicer hotels seem to be near the airport. I have only been to LA once and that was a long time ago. Is the airport an inconvenient place to stay as far as commutes to the disney area, hollywood area etc? Is it one of the safer areas to stay?

I would stay at the Sheraton Hotel right next the the airport. It’s a great Hotel with Wonderful Service.
Enjoy your time!

Don’t stay by the airport. Travelling in L.A. is a snap, nothing is too far.. oh you’ll run into traffic but be patient and you’ll get there.
I do not know where you actually need to be, but you can stay in Universal City and be close to most everything and it’s very safe.
There is a lot do right around there, including many very good places to eat. Disneyland would be about 55 minutes, Hollywood would be about 15 minutes (depending on traffic). Stay away from downtown L.A.
If you need to be closer to the San Fernando Valley, try any number of places in Sherman Oaks.
Go to check out the hotels icon, you can price hundreds of places to stay and see how they rate.
The Sheraton, The Marriott and as I have recently found out Holiday Inn Express is really nice and not too pricy.
Hope this helps

DO NOT stay at airport!!!!! Check out the Renaissance in Hollywood- it is convenient to everything you want to see and has a shuttle to Universal Studio. Airport is VERY SCARY. Do not scrimp on a room- there are very seedy hotels in LA.

If you are interested in going to Disneyland then check out the Doubletree Suites Anaheim/Convention Center. It is walking distance from Disney and when we went last week it was 99 for a night and for a GREAT hotel. It just recently opened so it feels very new and the staff there was wonderful. You get a great room for the price. It isn’t far from LA/Hollywood either. It is about a half hour from LAX and maybe 40 minutes from something such as Universal Studios Hollywood. But trust me, its a great place to stay and I felt 100% safe there. There are two Doubletree hotels in anaheim. The one that has convention center in it’s name is the one your looking for (since it is right by the convention center!)
