How to get best hotel rates in Malaysia, walk in or book in advance online?
Hotel Ratesmamode r asked:
I will be visiting Malaysia in April, im hoping to travel around the mainland and visit some of the East and west coast Islands. Just come back from tunisia where i paid dearly for not booking my hotels online. Just wanted to know what the best system is in Malaysia for getting the cheapest rates. Should i book in advance, or just walk in and negotiate, if i walk in is the marked price considerably higher than online price, which makes negotiating unworthwhile.
When you say travel agents, do u mean UK ones or ones in Malaysia, and if Malyasia can i book when i arrive.

Whatever u do, try to avoid Radius-international hotel. I booked it over the net and received wuite bad service in the end from them. Besides being double charged, the staff showed lack of understanding about their relationship with their internet partner and i got charged more than what was stated on the internet site. Its really bullshit service that i got, even up til now i am still waitin for them to process the money their double charged me.

better book-in..
just that when you are booking make sure u get the name of the staff & the booking number..

& then call the travel agent & try to compare with the rates..
depends on the hotel.. some hotel charge high for walk ins.. & some hotel charge high for bookings especially from overseas.. but most of all booking through travel agent will be less than normal..

Walk in rates are always flat rates from my past experiences, and most expensive amongs the 3 choices (walk in, travel agency, online booking).
While travel agencies could usually offer you better rates, hotels usually have online promotions to get people to visit their website and place a booking online, so my advice would be, first of all, pick a few hotels in the places that is already in your ‘must visit’ list, then start browsing the hotel’s own website as well as some of the local, Malaysia-based travel agency websites. A lot of them (travel agencies) are actually actively using internet and emails to rack in international customers so you can email them your query. Dont forget to leave your personal details, especially on when you will arrive, and how long you will be staying in a particular hotel. Since Malaysia is not exactly a small place, you might be emailing quite a number of hotels and travel agencies, but hey, it will cost less than you calling them, and perhaps could even save you the money that you might have spent by walking in.
That said, do not forget to counter check the hotel website (if they have one), as some major hotel chains have online promotions, for example, Genting Group (www.genting.com.my) offer a room for as low as MYR 20, during their promotions.
Sorry I cannot provide a list of all travel agencies in Malaysia as I am from the East.
