Do you think hotel rates should be lowered for hurricane evacuees in places like Dallas,Memphis &Atlanta ?
Hotel RatesJujeaux asked:
or is there bottom line that important? So $160+ a night should stand for an emergency?
Im talking about the rates for the upcoming evacuees for this season.

If not offered to them for free out of basic human decency, I think the rates should be reduced dramatically.
After all, I think that most hotel chains could probably claim the “loss” of providing that service on their yearly taxes, so they would get it the lost earnings back anyway.

Not NOW - it’s been almost a year since Katrina. Those people should already be well on the way to moving on with their lives, looking for jobs, etc. No one can expect a handout forever.

I’m sorry, but much as I sympathise with the plight of the evacuees, it is not the job of the hotels to provide subsidised accommodation for them. Many people forget the costs involved in running a large hotel and these are reflected in what they charge, plus of course a profit margin, and theres no harm in that, that after all is why they exist in the first place, they are not charity institutions.

They can all stay at my place for only 100 a night.

If we lived in a perfect world, they would do it voluntarily, and nobody would take advantage of it.
But alas, we do not live in a perfect world. It won’t happen voluntarily (at least not with all hotels) and if it does happen, everybody on vacation will suddenly be from the affected region.
After a short government paid hotel stay, everyone should be put back to work with the physical re-building the damaged area or using whatever vocational skills they have to help with the rebuilding—Payroll, accounts payable, filing papers, whatever….
